Does anyone know how van Leeuwenhoek's use of microscopes changed the future?

...in the medical field, I should say. He made microscopes that could magnify enough to view microorganisms. So how does this affect the medical field today? I just need a few ideas. Does it make diagnosis easier? Please help!
